PETERSBURG, Russia, June 7 (Xinhua) -- China called for greater effort in the
field of security cooperation in the region by the six member countries of the
Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
¡¡¡¡Speaking at the second summit meeting of the SCO on Friday, Chinese
President Jiang Zemin said the SCO member countries need to deepen their
cooperation in the area of security and intensify their efforts to crack down on
terrorism, separatism and extremism to maintain peace and stability.
¡¡¡¡The six-member countries of the SCO are China, Russia, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
¡¡¡¡The SCO was established in Shanghai, China, last year on the basis of the
former "Shanghai Five," a regional forum on securityand economic cooperation
among China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
¡¡¡¡In addition to security cooperation, Jiang said the six countries should
also try to strengthen their cooperation in the field of trade and economy,
tapping the potential of each country's resources.
¡¡¡¡Security cooperation, trade and economic cooperation are complementary to
each other in driving regional cooperation and the development of the SCO, the
Chinese leader said.
¡¡¡¡Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev,
Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev, Tajikistan President Emomali Rakhmonov, and
Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov also attended the one-day summit.
