Pakistan to work for region security with SCO: Musharraf

¡¡¡¡ISLAMABAD, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf said here Tuesday Pakistan would seek to work with the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) for the development, peace and security of the region.

¡¡¡¡He was speaking to reporters prior to his departure for China for the summit of SCO, a regional grouping which brings together China, Russia and Central Asian states with a focus on fostering peace, security and development.

¡¡¡¡The president expressed the hope that his participation at the SCO summit would bolster Pakistan's efforts for securing full membership of the organization as Pakistan had a great significance in the context of SCO charter.

¡¡¡¡He said that his bilateral meetings with the leaders of the regional countries on the sidelines of the summit would help enhance trade and economic ties with them.

¡¡¡¡The president referred to Pakistan's key location in the regionand said it would serve as a trade corridor for the regional countries.

¡¡¡¡"Pakistan can play a key role in promoting inter-regional and intra-regional trade, both within the SCO and between the SCO members and South Asia, the Gulf and the world as Pakistan provides sea access to them to the world," he stated.

¡¡¡¡Musharraf said that his meetings with the leadership of the regional grouping would also augment cooperation and the coordination on intelligence as every country of the region was affected as far security aspect was concerned.

¡¡¡¡Accompanying the president are Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani, Minister for Political Coordination Salim Saifullah Khan, Senator Haroon Akhtar Khan, Chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau Tariq Ikram, Governor of the State Bank Shamshad Akhtar and senior officials. Enditem
